handmade for newtown
dear friends,
as we struggle to make any sense of last week's shooting in CT, the heartbreak hits close to home. to think that this could happen to any of us is more than i can bear. from so many other mothers and fathers, i heard reflected the same fears, i felt the heartbreak, and wondered... what can we do?
after we hug our loved ones, comfort our children, and remind ourselves of all the good in this world, how can help those who have lost so much? some other amazing creative, talented, and compassionate bloggers and i have decided to do what we can to help raise funds to support those directly affected. we hope to use our creative gifts to raise a significant amount of funds, but we need your help too.
we are gathering donations of handmade items and craft/sewing supplies for an online auction which will take place january 14-18. 100% of funds raised will be donated to Newtown Parent Connection, where all funds will go directly to those affected by the shooting. if you have anything that you could donate to this cause, we would love for you to be a part of this as well.
the auction will be managed by myself and Kelley of casa crafty. we are very excited to be partnering with From the Heart Auctions, a charitable group i have had the pleasure of working with to raise money for various causes in the past. thanks to so many generous and crafty folks, we are off to a good start with the auction items collected so far, but every little bit more will help!
items for donation must be either handmade or craft/sewing supplies and ready to ship by the end the auction. as the donor, you must also be willing to cover the cost of shipping your handmade item(s) to the winner. a photo of your auction item(s) and a brief description are required, and will need to be submitted no later than january 1.
although we are not asking for the photo and desription of your item(s) untiljanuary 1 january 10, i do ask that you let me know now that you would like to be involved. this will help me get an idea of how many items to expect and put together a list of donors with whom to follow-up as time gets closer. i am well aware that this is an insanely busy time of year for most of us, so all i need at this time is a simple "i'm in" and your contact information.
*update: auction is now closed. we raised over $5,000 for Newtown Parent Connection!! thanks to all who made this possible.*

raccoon week: eye mask
today's project is perfect for a long winter's nap: a raccoon eye mask by Jane of buzzmills!!
Raccoons are the new foxes, which were the new owls...haven't you heard?!
Thanks so much Rachael for letting me join in on all of the raccoon fun. There have been so many great ideas so far. I mean, seriously, I can't wait to try all of them! Today I am adding something to help you sleep.
Don't be robbed of your sleep anymore! Make yourself a raccoon eye mask and get your beauty rest. (And if you find that you were, for some reason burglarized, stop on by my blog for another raccoon to help you with that too!)
Here's what you'll need: felt, 1/4" elastic, small piece of fabric for the back.
You will also need a larger template for the eye mask. I made a new version of the template for the eye mask based off of Rachael's original.
Once you have printed out the new template, cut out your pieces of felt place them where you want them...
With or without eyelashes. If you choose to use the eyelashes be sure to have a good amount of the bottom of the eyelash underneath the eye so that the eyelash is sewn on when you sew the eye. Then pin.
Sew around all of the edges, carefully lifting the eyelashes out of the way as you go.
Once you have the front of your mask complete you will need to cut out another piece of felt and one piece of fabric for the back. I used an organic cotton for my backing. Make sure that it is something soft, as it will be sitting directly against your eyes.
Cut the felt and fabric out using the template, but make each about a 1/4" larger than the template.
Sew the felt and fabric together with right sides facing using a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave about 2" open on the side for turning.
Turn the back right side out, pin the opening closed and then pin the back to the front of the eye mask. Make sure the fabric side is facing out.
Pin a 15" piece of 1/4" elastic to the sides and then carefully sew around the entire mask.
Voila! Raccoon eye mask!
I promise, it does fit an adult! These kiddos were just having too much fun with it...and it's pretty hard to take a picture of yourself, by yourself while wearing an eye mask...I couldn't see a thing!
Anywho...I hope you enjoy and get some sleep! Thanks again for having me Rachael. And don't forget to stop by my blog, buzzmills...for some more raccoon fun! are you in love with raccoons yet?
well, i'm ready for a nap now, how about you? thanks, Jane, for sharing this adorable project!!

raccoon week: hair clips and keychain
it's time to accessorize... with raccoon hair clips and *bonus* a raccoon keychain, thanks to the lovely Jennet from Feathered Nest Studio!
Hi! I'm Jennet from Feathered Nest Studio, and I am super excited to be participating in Rachael's Raccoon Week! Today I am going to share a fun hair clip project based off of her Raccoon Felt Ornament pattern. Since raccoon is the new black, stylish hair accessories are a must!
To start, print out Rachael's pattern except make it about 70% of its original size (unless you want a sizable raccoon on your head). Then gather your supplies.
Supplies:
Using needle and coordinating floss, start sewing your pieces on. I just used a simple whipstitch for this.

I just made one small change to Rachael's pattern. I used white felt for the eyes, then dark floss to add French knot pupils to the center of the white felt. I like any excuse to use French knots. Plus he looks cute like this.

Now it is time to attach the barrette clip to the back piece of raccoon head felt. That sounds weird, but you know what I mean. I just used an embroidery floss in a color that matched the felt and stitched the barrette on.

Then blanket stitch the back to the front.

Done! Wear and receive many compliments.

thank you, Jennet! i can't get over the awesomeness that is raccoon week :)
if you make raccoon fair clips or a keychain from this tutorial, please share pics in the imagine gnats flickr group. pattern and tutorial are for personal use only.

- felt scraps (three or four colors)
- coordinating embroidery floss
- needle
- scissors
- barrette clips (I used 2 inch ones)

Using needle and coordinating floss, start sewing your pieces on. I just used a simple whipstitch for this.

Bonus! You can use this same tutorial to make a raccoon keychain! When it cones time to sew the barrette clip on, don't. Instead, cut a strip of felt approximately 3/4 inch by 5 inches long. Fold in half and slide a metal key ring on it. .

Make a couple of stitches to hold the felt strip closed. Insert this between the raccoon front and back and blanket stitch everything closed.

Voila! Raccoon keychain!

Now go be a trendsetter with your raccoon accessories.

thank you, Jennet! i can't get over the awesomeness that is raccoon week :)
